Lake Norman is a man-made lake in the Catawba River basin. The largest of the lakes in the Duke Power chain, it has a shoreline of approximately 520 miles which is greater than the combined Atlantic Ocean coastlines of both North Carolina and South Carolina combined.Lake Norman is 34 miles long and more than eight miles across at its widest point making it a popular recreational destination. Area residents and tourist alike enjoy boating, sailing, and fishing. Lake Norman, with its public parks and marinas is emerging as a vacation destination for residents through the entire region. Several major Bass Fishing tournaments are held on the lake each year bringing national recognition to the area.A number of beautiful and sometimes challenging golf courses surround the lake. Some of the courses are in Country Club settings while others are public courses. Many people retire to the Lake Norman area due to its many amenities as well as its close proximity to Charlotte with its Douglas International Airport. I-77 as well as I-485 provides easy access to Charlotte, Union County, Iredell County. The states of South Carolina and Virginia are easily accessible by Interstate highway.The beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway is a short ninety minute drive north on Interstate 77. The historic beaches of both North Carolina and South Carolina are less than four hours to the southeast.The “Inland Sea” as it is sometimes called, is well over one hundred feet deep in places and is home to some of the best fishing in the Southeastern United States.Lake Norman is bordered by the North Caroline counties of Mecklenburg, Iredell, Catawba, and Lincoln. It is home for many of the professional sports and NASCAR celebrities of the area.The towns of Cornelius, Huntersville, Davidson, Mooresville, Sherrill’s Ford, and Denver are all proud of being lakefront towns and cities.Much of the areas drinking water is drawn from the Lake Norman and its companion lake, Mountain Island Lake located just to the south of Cowan’s Ford Dam.The Catawba River basin, with its electric power generation has long been the home of industries that have driven the economy of the entire Piedmont region of the Carolinas.
